EdAlive's Client Server Networking
Save time and make EdAlive titles very useful in your school!
EdAlive's Client Server networking saves student details and progress in one central location on the network allowing the students to access the EdAlive user profile from any computer on that network. This means that students can work from any computer connected to the network and still access their records and progress.
How it works
To set up an EdAlive client server network all you need is a network version of the relevant EdAlive title. A small application known as the EdAlive server is installed on any of the computers (Mac or Windows) on the network and a client copy of the software is installed on each student computer. When the student starts the EdAlive programme it will automatically find the EdAlive Server on the network and begin communicating with it.
Technical matters
- For the technically minded it all works with IP addresses but unless you are the network administrator you won't need to concern yourself with this.
- The EdAlive Server software can even operate on the same computer as the students are using although this is not recommended as all students will loose access to their records if someone turns this computer off.
- The EdAlive Server can operate as a Service on a Windows server
- Because our Client Server networking uses IP addresses access and permission issues that can arise with path based networking solutions (see below) do not arise.
One Server – Many EdAlive Titles
Many of the EdAlive titles use the EdAlive client server architecture. You can designate one computer on your network as the EdAlive server. When you install other instances of the EdAlive Server software on this machine they are added as modules to the existing EdAlive Server installation. This way you do not need to tie up multiple computers using them as servers.
Additionally, several of the V2 Edition titles that use the EdAlive Server make use of Integrated User Lists to reduce administration time and improve the your children's experience with the titles. Click here for more information.

EdAlive's Older Path-based Networking Solution
Some of our EdAlive products use a networking method where student's records are saved into a single file located on one of the computers on the network. To achieve this you need to set the details of the location of this computer by nominating the path to the folder in which this file is located.
This method is used by our older products and whilst good for its day can prove unreliable with modern operating systems designed to secure files on the network and make it difficult for other users to access them. The world of access provilidges and permissions can get very complex and cause problems for this method of networking.

- Spelling Force V1
- Aussie Spelling Force V1
- Numbers Up Volcanic Panic V1
