Students using Typing Tournament are reaching speeds of 45 Words Per Minute (wpm) by the time they finish primary school. This level of typing speed sets them up for success in their careers and gives them a massive time advantage over those that two finger type or hunt and peck as it is often described. Our data shows that no matter the level that students begin learning to type at – they will progress by 6wpm if they use the programme for around half an hour per week. This equates to an average increase of 24wpm per year for primary students.
An annual increase of 24wpm over the 6 years of primary school should result in a speed at the end of school around the 120wpm mark. This however is not the case as the students have other commitments in their learning journey which prevent such consistent progress. There are also physical limits to some children’s motor skills that come into play. Term breaks and exam weeks are just two examples of events that can prevent consistent practice in the school environment. When students have a break from consistent practice their ability will drop and some of that muscle memory will lapse.
Build speed at school and at home
The great thing about Typing Tournament is that students can access the programme at home and continue their progression if they desire. Typing Tournament is accessible on any device even mobile phones. However we wouldn’t suggest that to be the ideal method of creating accurate and fast keyboarding. A professional typist must be able to maintain speed above 80wpm with at least 95% accuracy.
High typing speed give a significant advantage
Students that achieve high touch typing speeds in line with the current ACARA guidelines have a significant advantage in online tests where speed of typing allows them to think clearly while producing text and gives them far more time to review and alter their responses to questions. The advantage is also readily observable in essay and assignment writing. Once someone is able to type at 60wpm the flow of thought to paper while looking at the screen and producing text is uninterrupted. This produces far better quality prose resulting in better results in less time. Modern life is so busy these days and any and all time saved improves our life quality and our mental health! I would recommend Typing Tournament as a means of achieving this genuine life skill to everybody who isn’t currently able to produce 60wpm.
