Research Underpins EdAlive Websites

EdAlive is committed to educational design directed and validated by research.

Ongoing development of our products follows evidence-based best practice and has resulted in the publication of our five online learning websites.

Research by EdAlive Online Learning website:

Enhancing our long heritage

All of our websites have been developed from our widely popular multi-award winning CD-based products with a history stretching back to 1987. Not only were these popular in the classroom, but also at home. The development of this products was extensively informed by feedback from students and teachers, and classroom observation by our own practitioners. So, we already knew that students found these products to be engaging and enjoyable. Additionally, teachers could see their classes being challenged and actively learning. Our CD products are now end-of-life but this is not the end of the story.

Revolutionary features added

We have now built on the rich research base of our CD products to create our new new online format, with many revolutionary features added. These include automated adaptive learning, real time multi-player games and built-in reports. Even as the stable of online products expands, EdAlive remains committed to continuous improvement. We do this to achieve the best outcomes for students and teachers. We remain convinced that well-designed online learning not only increases knowledge but that it also builds confidence and a love of learning. The culmination of this priming students for ongoing success.

Analysis of real-time data underpins our development

With the move from CDs to online delivery, a fresh and powerful research angle has opened. This is accomplished through real-time data collection showing how each website operates under real-time conditions. We also gain insight against everything that students can throw at it. Already we can see that the websites are operating robustly and largely as anticipated. Informed by this feedback we have made a range of minor changes to the websites. This in turn helps further our operational optimisation.

Outstanding results quantified

Our long established  websites Typing Tournament Online and Maths Invaders Online have a significant body or research already completed. The results clearly show that students using these websites are making outstanding progress and with a demonstrated educational advantage. Where possible these gains have been externally validated by comparison with the relevant NAPLAN results.

Current focus

A major focus of our ongoing research is on defining reliable measures of student progress – both as a basis for further research, and as part of the design of reporting modules for students, teachers and parents, particularly with relation to our newest websites Words Rock, Baggin’ the Dragon Mths and Volcanic Panic Reading Success. The results of our studies are published firstly in blog articles on this site.

Research directions and findings

Further investigation will seek to drill down deeper into the data to ensure the greatest level of success. One example of this is checking each website is effective across students with diverse backgrounds over the widest possible age range. We will also quantify the educational progress and advantage that is gained by regular use, and what patterns of use are most effective. Later work will look into correlations with performance in external benchmarks such as NAPLAN.

Collaboration with the University of New England

We are currently engaged with independent researchers from the University of New England to further explore the impact of our products on learning from an educational psychology perspective.
