Armidale is a vibrant community, with a population of 25,000, located in the heart of the New England Tablelands in Northern New South Wales. Armidale is a unique rural centre with a university, a variety of high quality schools and colleges, historic monuments, museums, galleries, colourful pubs, restaurants, coffee shops, bookshops, and great shopping. It is surrounded by the state’s most magnificent national parks and excellent grazing lands.

Armidale is Australia’s highest-altitude city (980 metres), conveniently located mid-way between the major cities of Sydney and Brisbane.

Major rural industries include Merino sheep breeding for fine and superfine wool, beef cattle, lamb, fruit and a growing wine grape industry. Education, training and research are supplemented by Distance and Online Education and significant IT resources.

Rural infrastructure includes seventeen cattle breed societies and Australian Red Deer Society. Also, the Sheep and Beef Co-operative Research Centres, the Centre for Sustainable Farming Systems and the Institute of Rural Futures are all located in Armidale.

As an “education town”, Armidale is home to the University of New England (UNE), New England Institute of TAFE, six secondary schools, nine primary schools, eight pre-schools and three child care centres.

Research: UNE is one of Australia’s great teaching, training and research universities with many partnerships and links with government, academic and business entities.

Tourism: Tourism is based chiefly on education and heritage considerations, with an increasing emphasis on eco-tourism and environmental explorations, especially in the World Heritage-listed national parks.
