Spelling Force delivers a powerful learning experience

An analysis of student responses has demonstrated that:

  • When a student gets a word incorrect on the first attempt, up to 72% of second attempts achieve the correct answer.
  • Higher rates of correct 2nd attempt answers were also demonstrated for Mastery Mode over teacher assigned spellings, thus validating the Automated learning system.
  • The data broadly indicates that all students are having this type of learning experience in every lesson with Spelling Force.

Detailed findings

In Automated Learning Mode, Spelling Force initially levels students and then presents spellings appropriate for the student’s level in Mastery Mode. Using the Teacher Driven mode teachers may also assign spellings for students to work on. In either scenario when a student is unsuccessful at spelling a word, Spelling Force will present the same word again in the short term.

Across Mastery and Assigned content, the success at first attempt on pooled data is very similar – about 73% correct, 25% incorrect and 2% “too hard”.

However, there are clear differences which are evident at the second attempt following an initial unsuccessful attempt. For Assigned Content, 60% of incorrect first attempts are followed by a correct answer – that is, a student who couldn’t reliably spell the word at the first attempt, has had a “learning experience” and achieved success on their second attempt. This is a strong result, demonstratingthe instructive value of Spelling Force.

In Mastery mode, an even stronger result is apparent – 72% of incorrect first attempts are followed by a correct answer at the next attempt, demonstrating a “learning experience” for the student. We attribute this outstanding result to the accurate levelling within Automated Learning. Even when the words presented are beyond the student’s current knowledge, they are generally within the difficulty range which can be reached with diligence. This is a great outcome for students – who grow in confidence with every lesson as Spelling Force progressively extends them.
